Three Birds Casual is a family-owned business founded by brothers-in-law Victor Lewis (CEO) and Tad Varga (President) in 1999 and is based in Indiana. Hearth and Patio is proud to carry their product line. They specialize in designing, manufacturing, and distributing luxury outdoor living products, featuring many iterations of teak wood craftsmanship. The result is furniture providing decades of lasting quality, and their manufacturing methods use grade-A Teak, harvested from government-run plantations in Indonesia, resulting in sustainable manufacturing that helps fight deforestation.
Their Classic Bench suits both traditional and modern homes. It beckons visitors to have a seat and a glass of sweet tea and is also suitable for kids to be encouraged to ditch their muddy shoes. In the garden, the Victoria Garden Bench, with its curved lines adds an elegant touch and a place for a weary gardener to take a break. Rock away the stress of a busy day on the Brittany Rocker, or go for full-scale relaxation with the Riviera Lounger. Its adjustable back allows you to position yourself to enjoy the latest best-seller or lay flat and grab a well-deserved nap. These loungers are also popular poolside.
Entertaining? For guests and yourself, add easy-care Teak to your patio for casual dinner parties and evenings watching the sunset. Sink into the St. Lucia Deep Seating Group and relax as if you are on the island yourself. The St. Lucia or Riviera Dining Groups provide comfortable options for enjoying Sunday brunch or a barbeque before the Panthers game. The Riviera Dining Group offers folding chairs with fade, tear, and mildew-resistant fabric while the St. Lucia Dining Group has classic lines.
What is Teak?
Teak is a tropical hardwood tree species that is formally known as Tectona grandis. It’s a large tree found in mixed hardwood forests and is native to South Asia (Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Sri Lanka), but it has also been cultivated in Africa and the Caribbean. The trees have large papery leaves, small white flowers, and the wood smells a bit like leather when freshly milled.
The wood is used for boat building, construction, furniture, carving, and more. Teak is very durable and contains natural oils that aid in keeping the wood looking great in exposed locations (gardens, porches), and it is termite and pest-resistant. It’s even durable when not treated with oil or varnish, therefore providing a low-maintenance option for homeowners. Sustainability of the tree has become a priority for those who harvest teak with several countries carefully monitoring forestry plantations.
Easy to care for!
Teak’s rich natural oil and resin content allows water to roll off it, so no need to panic if your furniture gets wet in the rain. It’s the very reason mariners have used Teak for years, you may have even seen a teak top deck or interior on your last boat ride.
Products made to seal, clean and protect Teak are available to help protect from stains and mold.
Timeless.
Designers from Scandinavia and those who created the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic loved working with Teak! From furniture to accessories, it’s been a favorite choice for many because of its durability and ease of use.
These noted Designers & Architects embraced Teak in their designs:
- Hans J. Wegner – A legendary Danish furniture designer who created iconic Teak chairs like the Wishbone Chair and Round Chair (often called “The Chair”).
- Arne Jacobsen – Famous for his Teak Egg Chair and Swan Chair, blending organic shapes with modernist aesthetics.
- Finn Juhl – Another Danish designer who made Teak furniture an art form, known for pieces like the Chieftain Chair and 45 Chair.
- Jens Risom – A pioneer of Scandinavian modern design, who frequently worked with Teak.
- Eames (Charles and Ray Eames) – Though more known for molded plywood and fiberglass, they also incorporated Teak in their designs. These American designers were husband and wife, with Charles being born in St. Louis and Bearnice Alexandra “Ray” Kaiser was born in Sacramento. Partners in life and work-they were internationally recognized for their architecture, design and furniture.
Adored – Teak is a celebrity favorite!
Long before social media, celebrities loved showing off their homes in newspapers and magazines.
Actor Steve McQueen loved motorcycles and fast cars, but he also enjoyed the classic style in his home and embraced the Mid-Century Modern look which incorporated teak. “Old Blue Eyes” himself, Frank Sinatra, adored his Palm Springs home with featured sleek, modern furnishings with teak accent pieces and, Audrey Hepburn, actress and humanitarian, enjoyed living in homes with minimalist and Scandinavian-inspiring furniture.
“Are you talkin’ to me?”. Robert De Niro might not be talking to us, but he’s had a conversation or two in rooms filled with Teak. De Niro is a partner of Nobu Hotels, an international chain of luxury hotels and restaurants. There are 15 Nobu Hotels around the globe. His love of Teak has inspired the design of rooms that feature teak flooring, walls, and furniture. Additionally, a Japanese soaking tub, tub butler (a caddy that spans the tub’s width), and a sitting stool -all made of teak-can can be found in their spa-like bathrooms. (source: teakculture.com)
